Media Release 16 – Welsh Government Makes Wrong Decision on Farm Payments

Welsh Government Makes Wrong Decision on Farm Payments

The Tenant Farmers Association Cymru has said that the Welsh Government’s decision to transfer 15% of the budget for direct payments to farmers into rural development activities is simply wrong.

TFA Cymru Chairman, Dennis Matheson said “With the Governments in England and Scotland deciding to transfer 12% and 9.5% respectively, the decision of the Welsh Government will place Welsh farmers at a disadvantage at the same time as we will be having to cope with a major upheaval to our payments’ system as we move towards a flat rate payment structure”.

“The decision also places the cart before the horse as we are yet to have a discussion with the Government on exactly what the money will be spent.  The consultation on the Rural Development Programme is yet to happen.  This is not a well thought through decision,” said Mr Matheson.
