Michael Halford 1931 – 2014: An Ambassador for the Tenanted Sector of Agriculture

The Tenant Farmers Association is sad to have learnt of the death of one of its past National Chairmen, Michael Halford.

TFA Chief Executive, George Dunn said “Michael was a true gentleman and disarmingly gracious company.  He had both great wisdom and diplomacy which he used to great effect as an ambassador on behalf of the tenanted sector of agriculture over many years”.

Michael was a founder member of the TFA and a member of its Executive Committee from the very beginning of the Association in 1981.  He went on to become TFA National Chairman between 1992 and 1994 and remained on the Executive Committee until 2003.  During his time as TFA National Chairman, Michael dealt with three Agricultural Ministers – Michael Jopling, John Gummer and Gillian Shephard.  At the same time with Hugh Duberly as CLA president and David Naish as NFU President there was talk of the East Anglian Farming Mafia.

Having left Cirencester after a short course in 1958, he landed the tenancy of the 370 acre Grange Farm on the Hamerton estate in Huntingdonshire.  Although he was proud of his achievements with the TFA, he said of himself, ‘I rate the fact that I farmed my land pretty well, leaving nearly 20 miles of hedgerow, new spinneys and a lake to show for my 37 years tenure as my best life’s work‘.

In 2004 Michael published a book about his life, the TFA and farming in general under the heading ‘Pens to Ploughshares’ full of a range of amusing anecdotes including the time he accidentally spat meringue crumbs over the Duke of Edinburgh’s pullover.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Michael’s family including his children Bridget, James, Peter, Ben, Will and Rosie,” said Mr Dunn.
