BPS England 2017: Top Tips for Completing Sketch Maps

Accurate sketch maps are key to assisting RPA digitisers with completing the mapping request. The sketch map is the main element of information the RPA digitiser has access to and that is used in conjunction with the latest Ordnance Survey data and aerial photography.

Ask yourself – “Could I map this accurately for a holding I do not know from the information I have given on the sketch map?”

  •  Give all additional notes on the sketch map, not on the RLE1 form or in a covering letter
  •  Use a fine-tipped coloured pen to mark the changes
  •  Provide accurate measurements in metres
  •  Use other mapped features as reference points e.g. fence line or building
  •  Be specific about the land use of any new features
  •  Cross through old boundaries, give new and old parcel references
  •  Include the SBI on each sketch map
